One of my favourites! Rainy weekend here, so I thought this would be a great treat when I saw some lovely butternuts on sale yesterday. I thought their season has ended but looks like there still some about, happy days. What goes in it: One medium to large butternut squash or two small ones Two large or three small red peppers One onion As much garlic as you can handle, or enough to sink a battleship, what ever comes first. (I like four big cloves for this dish) Bit of…

Hello All, Apologies that I been so quiet over the past few weeks. I have been 100 committed to getting as much work done as possible. I need to get back down to the coast ASAP and I can only do that if I have enough cash saved. So Ive taken any and all work I can get. It’s going well but I’m stretched and feeling the pressure of long days without a break since Feb. Looking ahead things should be more reasonable from week after next…so the light is…
The owl box is up! So pleased with it and here’s hoping a lovely owl will do us the pleasure of moving in sharpish! Owls are fantastic for pest control (read rats) and are just nice birds to have around too. I love hearing their call at night. Owls, like many birds and especially birds of prey are really struggling because we have destroyed their habits. So putting up owl boxes and giving them a place to nest is a big help. Attached the plans I found, they easy to…
Tomatoes are coming in thick and fast now from the garden. Fantastic in a mixed lettuce salad from the garden! Now all I need is a goat so I can make some decent goats cheese to go with that. Later today I’m putting up an owl box in the large bramler tree outside. They a huge help with keeping rat numbers down which have exploded with no real predators about. Will post some pics later.
Bit of a funny I had save for future reference and share. Enjoy (via Michele, thanks!) Proudly showing off his newly-leased downtown apartment to a couple of friends late one night, a drunk Maori led the way to his bedroom where there was a big brass gong hanging on the wall. ‘What’s that big brass gong for?’ one of the friends asked. ‘Issss nod a gong. Issss a talking Australian clock,’ he drunkenly replied. ”A talking Australian clock – seriously?’ ‘Yup.’ ‘Hmmm (hic).’ ‘How’s it work?’ the second friend asked,…
I like Sundays. It seems the world seems to slow down a bit. As if everyone takes a breath and is a little closer to how life should be. Spending time doing the things you like doing. Alan Watts the philosopher talks about choosing to spend your time on tasks that you enjoy doing rather than choosing them for financial reward only. If not he says; “You will spend your life completely wasting your time. You will be doing things you don’t like doing in order to go on living…
Been pottering about today, I like doing that! Did some SYSAdmin stuff this morning early then got some tools out to make a vertical herb garden. There a few old pallets about here so I thought about re-purposing them. I made the vertical garden without to much bother and got thinking about some hanging flower baskets and a couple benches. While all that was going on I been keeping one eye on the cricket. South Africa is having a great series against New Zealand and this second test we really…
This is a post from The Art of Manliness The shemagh (pronounced “schmog”) – also called a keffiyeh and ghutrah – originated in the Middle East. They are a scarf-type wrap commonly found in arid regions to provide protection from direct sun exposure, as well to protect the mouth and eyes from blown dust and sand. It’s similar to a bandana, except much larger – approximately 42″ x 42″. It has been adopted by military forces all over the world as a standard issue garment because of its sheer functionality.
Had a very lekker day yesterday. My close friends Janice and Matt have been visiting family here and will be leaving to go home soon. We been trying to get a good beach day done for ages now and after a false start on Friday, the wind was just to strong, we decided on yesterday. I took them down to Kidd’s Beach, my favourite spot and where I grew up. We arrived about 12ish and made our way down the beach. Quite a few folks about but not very busy…
