Really fantastic pics from Antarctica of King Penguin chicks. A clear indicator that we have been here almost a full year now, the king penguins have gone full circle and a new batch of chicks has been born on the island, ready to keep the next group of expeditioners company over winter. They really are the ugly ducklings of the penguin world. The JunoCam imager on NASA’s Juno spacecraft snapped this shot of Jupiter’s northern latitudes on Dec. 11, 2016 at 8:47 a.m. PST (11:47 a.m. EST), as the spacecraft performed a close flyby of the gas giant planet. The spacecraft was at an altitude of 10,300 miles (16,600 kilometers) above Jupiter’s cloud tops. This stunning view of the high north temperate latitudes fortuitously shows NN-LRS-1, a giant storm known as the Little Red Spot (lower left). This storm is the third largest anticyclonic reddish oval on the planet, which Earth-based observers…
It’s been to long since I posted, so here then a very quick update! I not been spearfishing since last year when I got my arse handed to me on the rocks at blue fish gully. But… my mojo is back. Need to get my gear all ready and then it’s time get some fish again. Running, I hurt my ITB last year doing a long trail run over very rough terrain. It’s only now starting to come right but I got to take it real slow… I’m still building…
Excuse the brevity of this post. Busy time at the moment! So short and sweet it is. Got a beauty of a blue fish on Sunday. We had spectacular conditions, the best all year. And I got two blues. The one in the picture was by biggest blue fish to date. Not sure on the weight. Over 2kgs, under 3? Something like that. It will feed 6 easily so a nice slab. Took it off a shallow reef at Kidds Beach where I stay. Was a great dive. Crystal clean…
As winter breaks in Cornwall and the sun starts rising earlier, you’ll see the small boat fishing fleet of Cornwall steaming out before sunrise every morning. They hunting mackerel. I had the privilege to fish commercially for mackerel out of Mousehole for a season. It was hard work but some of the most rewarding hours I’ve spent at sea. The feeling of a hand line filled with 15+ mackerel as you pull it up and it’s just “silver” coming over the gunwale, it’s exhilarating…. you yank that tiller over hard…
So was thinking about Easter weekend in Cornwall and in particularly the Good Friday walk which is a fantastic tradition in Mousehole. It stems from the Spanish raid of 1595 (Wikipedia article on the raid). If I remember the story correctly, the women of the village would dress up and carry sticks so that they looked like soldiers caring muskets, then patrol the cliffs between Lamorna and Mousehole to give the Spanish the impression that the village was well defended. (If I got the story wrong please correct me in…

Lovely day out on Sunday with friends at Tea in the Trees in Chintsa, stunning little market and restaurant. Picked up Dru, Rob and Nicole and we made our way out there with the intention of finding a nice spot for lunch. The market was on and they have some great stalls. We’d booked a table at Arena for lunch so we did not eat there, just stopped for some coffee in the trees 🙂 The restaurant is beautiful though, nestled in the trees so will be back from a…
