I recently advised my dear Mother Duck on some software to install on her new Windows installation. Now those that know me well will now that I’m an advocate of Linux and open source software in general, but unfortunately it’s “just easier” to have her running Windows at the moment, long story.

However that does not mean that open and free software  needs to go out the window…There some great apps out there and I tried to include some of these in my selections for her.  I’ve listed these below in case they can help some others too. These are a mixed selection of propriety and open software, but all at zero cost.

Dived the Kellen and the Trees yesterday afternoon. On the first dive I saw a nice sized bass, about 1.5 kilos, but I must have dived right onto it as it scooted away pretty sharpish and never turned for a shot…

Had a little dive this afternoon. Boy was it cold… dived Mousehole Island, St Clements Isle. Mark gave me a lift out, that was lucky as I reckon it was that cold that I would have been to cold to dive my the time I swam out there… Anyway, no point moaning, I know it’s about 4 weeks to early…

Some words of wisdom collected. These are meant to make you smile, not change your life 🙂 Whoever coined the phrase “Quiet as a mouse” has never stepped on one. Hospitality: making your guests feel like they’re at home, even if you wish they were. I should’ve known it wasn’t going to work out between my ex-wife and me. After all, I’m a Libra and she’s a bitch. A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort. –…

Was at a bit of a loss what to do with myself this morning, so decided to check out one of the lovely gardens dotted around my local area. And boy am I glad I did, little gem! Can’t believe it’s taken me so long to go explore these gardens at Trengwainton. With many of the spring blossoms out, it was stunning! Will definitely be back for a picnic or two on terrace which overlooks Mounts Bay, stunning views. Finished the walk with a massive scone with clotted cream and…

Well I braved the 8 or 9 degree water to have my first dive of the year. Was fantastic to get back in the water. Did not see anything for the pan, but lots of life about. Saw a small bass, a horse mackerel, shoal of pipe fish and loads of small pollock. Amazing how the cold saps you though. I only just managed to peel myself off the couch to post this! Team Mousehole has a new boat too. Although Dave is up the line a bit we’ll be…

Sad news tonight. Speaking to my Mum earlier and she told me my lovely Chloe is not doing so well. Her hips are causing her a lot of pain. She now has to have a weekly injection to help. Miss you Chloe, wish I could give you a big hug you big teddy bear.

This was made famous years ago when released as a music single “Everybody’s Free (To Wear Sunscreen)“, released in 1998, by Baz Luhrmann, but originally written by Mary Schmich. (Wiki) I dug it up the other day when I heard some sad news and thought it’s worth sharing it’s positive message. This is the original version by Mary Schmich. Wear sunscreen. If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it. The long-term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by scientists, whereas the rest of…
