So was thinking about Easter weekend in Cornwall and in particularly the Good Friday walk which is a fantastic tradition in Mousehole. It stems from the Spanish raid of 1595 (Wikipedia article on the raid). If I remember the story correctly, the women of the village would dress up and carry sticks so that they looked like soldiers caring muskets, then patrol the cliffs between Lamorna and Mousehole to give the Spanish the impression that the village was well defended. (If I got the story wrong please correct me in…

Update 15/02: Some footage from yesterday, very close to where I used to stay http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-26201276 http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-26199009 Some serious damage around Cornwall from a “proper” winter storm… Not to much damage in Mousehole compared to other places like Porthleven. The below youtube videos are from Sennen and Porthleven. Next storm is due this weekend. Stay safe all. Waves off the Longships and Sennen. http://youtu.be/KDy5IqsElpY Pic from when I was last at the Longships… spearfishing. Don’t think it would be wise to be out there on a day like in the vid!…
(cross posted from brendan@work) UK fishing communities are having their fishing rights stolen from them. Having lived in a fishing community in the UK for four years and fished for pleasure and profit, I have seen the devastation of this policy, and the myriad of other EU and UK fisheries policy, has wrecked the livelihood of local small boat fishermen, who make up 75% of the UK fishing fleet. Again we see big business forcing the hand of politicians for their own gain rather than the protection of a public…

Well, funny you should ask. I spent the morning diving in the harbour surrounded by the diesel from our sunken boat…mmm not a good look for the Aquila it’s got to be said! Well we managed to get a line on her and pull her out. So she’s busy draining as we speak… Hopefully we can get the engine started later, if so then mostly no harm done. More later. Update 03/11: Engine has been started and it seems we got away lucky there. Starter moter seems ok too, not sure on alternator, it…

Sea, Salts and Sail was one of the first festivals I attended here in Cornwall, back in 2008, and living in the village at the time it was real treat for me even if the racing was cancelled that year as we got to still sail on the Veracity. This year the weather played along and it was absolutely fantastic, a brilliant weekend of sailing, friends, music and rum.
Last night was the first of many fantastic get-togethers this summer. The fantastic Terri organised the get-together and what a roaring success it was!
