Had a nice sunrise dive this morning. We still experiencing quite heavy swell so most of my normal spots are washed out at the moment. However the tide was just right at sunrise this morning so that “blue fish gully” was on. It’s a big gully running out just below my house and when if you can get in there… it usually bags you a fish or two.
It was tough diving though. Lots of water washing through the gully with the big swell and lots of white water which meant that you had to hang on to a piece of kelp for dear life while the set washed through, then let go and drift into the hole between the breaks in the set and wait for the white water to clear and the fish to come in all before the next set crashed in…
It was very fishy, lots of small fish, shoals of mullet and some undersized silver steenbras. And through the white water there where these lovely big shapes… lots of them. Whoohoo fish. The viz cleared and there was a black, just checking me out. Undersized mind you so left him, but he was still a nice big fish. Not a bad start… kept diving, lots of waiting for the sets to clear and dives being washed out by a new set… I kept seeing nice shapes in the water but was not sure what I was seeing! So frustrating. Did not want to klap an undersized black or silver thinking it was a nice blue fish… a hour or so in and there was a break in the sets and I got a good dive in. Surrounded by a shoal of small silver steenbras, the water cleared and in came a few blue fish, all size. I picked the biggest and smiled. Blue Fish Gully you beauty.
Also got a smaller “stinkvis” or Stone Breem but the blue was the prize and we had him for lunch that very day! 🙂
Good on yer mate. One of the tastiest fish in the sea. “We had it for lunch. ” Who is the “WE” ? Mackerel still like rocking horse shit. Last 8 hours produced no more than 5 fish – eish. Lots of huge jelly fish about. Big brown buggers some over a metre across. Some leather back turtles have been spotted feeding on them. A few weeks ago Ross got a fright coming up for air stuck his head right in the middle of one. Cough – splutter – panic – brown wet suit !!!!
Cheers M
Shot Muddy! Ask no questions and hear no lies 😉 Be nice if we could all sit down again soon for a supper of fresh fish and talk kak after a hard day’s diving off the boat! I miss that! Bummer about the mackerel, perhaps they not so keen on the jellies… I know I’m not. They pretty look at… but not to wear! Go Ross, sporting the latest in spearo gear 😉 The turtles must be amazing to see, hope you get to check them out.
