Cape Town trip – Part 1

Table Mountain

Welcome back. That’s what Cape Town seemed to say as we came down Sir Lowry’s Pass and made our way into the Mother City. It’s been about 18 months, it seemed so long since I’d been here and at the same time, like I never left. Odd.

A long trip down overnight, arrived in Cape Town around 11 and Alan picked me up. We drove through to Hout Bay where I would stay till Sunday.

We pottered around for the day, Al had some work to finish and I got settled in and had a power nap.  For chow we planned to go to the “market” which was just round the corner. The last time I was in CT it had just opened and I was pleased to see that it is doing extremely well. The food variety is fantastic and we enjoyed a great meal, a few beers and a good chat with some folks before heading back.

Saturday morning I arranged to meet my friend Jax at Dunes. I walked through the harbour and across beach to Dunes, a stunning walk by any standards! Had a great catchup and a good breakfast too 🙂 After which I made my way back across the beach again.

On the way back I picked up a some amazing fresh tuna from the harbour for a pittance. It would be perfect for the braai later that evening.

After lunch I called Lindy and Mike and popped in for tea and a good catchup. Really great to visit Sorgh Vliet again and had a fantastic afternoon catching up. Was really fortunate that Kim was on her way back from a show and managed to see her at the same time.

Busy day Saturday! I got back and only had time for a quick shower before heading off to a braai at friends of Alan’s whom I’d met on Friday night. The tuna was delicious! Fresh fish man, it’s the food of the gods in my opinion.

Had a really lovely evening with new friends, good food, good conversation and good people, the best way to spend an evening.

Sunday I was off to Grabouw in the Elgin valley where my good friends Jay and Sascha now stay with their two little ones. Arrived there late afternoon and enjoyed a lovely evening catching up on the years since we’d last seen each other. Jay had a real treat for dinner, zebra burgers! They where fantastic!

Monday was to be a big day! After the kids where all sorted Jay and I got the fishing rods packed and we headed for Mofam for a day’s bass fishing. It was a brilliant day out on the water, the setting was spectacular and company even better. Sadly we never landed a fish but we certainly had a jol and ate well with venison pies, great sandwiches and home made ginger beer, happy days 🙂 It really took me back to the all the time I spent as a kid fishing on the farm dam and that alone was worth it.

Tuesday Jay had to go into work to prep food and make sure things where still standing so I tagged along. It’s a stunning place Old Mac Daddy’s trailer park and Jay’s got his restaurant there. The views are amazing, I’m sure you’ll agree.

Sat enjoying the view working and writing a bit. Chilled day really. After lunch I went and tried for a few bass on the local dams there, no luck again! Jay did manage one later in the afternoon. So the tally officially stands, EC 0 – WC 1 … I hang my head in shame.

My last night with Jay and Sascha was spent having a lovely chilled evening  before heading back to Cape Town on Wednesday morning.

A fantastic trip so far! More once I get home and can write it all up!

Here is a selected number of pics from my time in Hout Bay and Elgin Valley.
