Well folks, after 10-12 hours of diving in pre-season freezing cold Cornish oceans, I’m pleased to say I landed my first fish of the season. I dived Mousehole Island from the shore yesterday. The water was cold, probably around 10/11 degrees and the vis not great, about 3-4 meters. Did a few dives and did not see a thing worth pulling the trigger on. Diving right in close in about 5-6 meters on the back of the island, I saw my first shoal of bass for 2010.
Needless to say I was so shocked I could not decide which bloody fish to shoot. In my defence most of the shoal was under size so I was trying to pick the biggest one out of about 30-40 fish. Anyway I ran out of gas and they ran out of interest and no transaction was closed. No worries I thought, they where not spooked at all so knew I’d see them again. Dived again, slightly deeper this time, about 10 meters, and they came in again. A nice sized fish came in from the right, I waited for him to turn but he turned back to the right and I could not get a shot off, again ran out of gas waiting for him to come in again… finned to the top cursing big time. Hours and hours of diving and the first opportunity I get I don’t land the fish… dived again and saw nothing. Now I’m pissed, “they gone” I thought…. dived again a little further on and they came in from behind me, “fuck it” I thought, not going home without dinner AGAIN… so gave the first one that offered a shot the good news. Head shot of course 🙂 Bad news is poor little bugger was under size by a couple of inches. Guess his mommy will be wonder why he never came home… oh well. I hope to get mommy next time and then she won’t have to worry any longer!
I’m not going to bother with a pic folks, the little chap is really not worth it. But rest assured there’ll be loads of pics coming as we get the boat up and running over the next couple if weeks and get out to the Tragethian Ledges, Low Lee and some other hot spots. Here some more pics from 2009/8 to keep you busy till then!
