Bye Bye Cape Town

From an email to friends in 2005 before leaving for the UK

Hello Everyone,

Please excuse the group email but boy time has just not been on my side the past while and I really wanted to share some news and these pics with everyone. For those of you on dial-up, sorry but it’s not that big an email is it? 🙂

Well where to start, everyone is pretty much up to speed I think with the fact that I have packed my bags for England, a second time yes I know, but this time for a serious stint. For good if all goes well boys and girls, if I can con those buggers for long enough to give me a passport that is! That said it will be only six months before I’m out here on holiday again! Thanks to Jan getting married here in Slummies next January! It’s going to be a blast! Some of you where partakers in the our last Slummies wedding where we imported some of you expats in the UK for a grand shingding which included a blow-up doll called Monica, a band called Semisane (a fairly well know, at the time, local SA band), the infamous “Numbers” dance club, several hundred litres of liquor (give or take a few zeros), a road trip, several towns/cities, bungee jumping and grand time with great mates! So if it’s half as good as the last time…. can’t wait to be back! And this time I’m going to be the one bringing pounds! Hippee! Oh and I’ll be popping into Cape Town first for new years if all goes well so boy o boy am I looking forward to that!!!

But back to the now, do I always get side tracked like this? As you may have gathered I’m in East London at the moment visiting my folks before I make the plane journey over next Tuesday. It’s been great being back here and unwinding, taking in some good r&r. The weather has been AMAZING, summer in the middle of winter, go figure. So off to the beach with the dogs for me over the next few days!

Before I left Cape Town we had a little do-da at my house. For those of you that could make it, thanks it was fantastic! What a great night. For those of you that missed out on the Fez after, and a certain incident on the motorway coming home well shame on you sleepy heads! That said it would probably not have been a good idea to have more than one vehicle with occupants on it’s roof going down the highway…what ever gave that crazy bastard that idea I’ll never know. But it looked like fun 🙂

The celebration also made some history, it was the first time that Menno’s famous sauté sauce was finished, not because there is anything wrong with it, it’s just Menno recipe does not cater for less than 75 litres of sauce … anyway this time I was determined and we whipped loads of snacks that would make good use of this remarkable dish and behold! We did it! SO well done everyone! And Menno you have got to trademark that sauce man, someone is going to make money out of it!

As per usual, everyone arrived fairly sober, seemed to be sane and in good health. Of course I know better and smiled inwardly… after several bottles of wine, some Jack Daniel iced tea infusion, a wonderful invention by Mr Alan, the I can drive on beach in Hout Bay Bradburn – wonder if the Jack Daniels had anything to do with that idea??? and a couple of beers things where on a roll. After much chit chat about the future of the world economy and such like things we entered the “I don’t care about the pictures or head ache in the morning phase”. My personal favourite! Well the only casualty of the evening, other than the aspirin bottle in the morning – we much to experienced for anything to go wrong ever…, was dear Cheryl’s shoulder, and that really only after a bit of salsa baby! Guess we should have gone to one or two more lessons before trying the over the shoulder throw! Hay at least there was plenty of wine and good food to nurse you back to health China!!!

The evening, for most, ended on a fairly chilled note with some great tunes we all loved from Johnny Clegg to Pearl Jam, god what good memories those songs bring back and some more good ones have now been added! So thanks to you guys for making it a great evening and looking forward to doing it all over again in December/Jan.

Now for you poor buggers that have got to deal with me over there… I arrive on the 20th July and will be jumping right into the job market. So it’s going to be pretty hectic to start off with. But lets keep in touch and catch-up soon! I’m keen for just about anything so let me know what you all up too!

I also just want to say thanks to every single one of you in Cape Town who have made the past eight years one of the best times anyone could ever want. To Jay, the first person I knew in Cape Town, thanks for giving me the break I needed. Without those crazy days at All Bar None I would never have made it to Cape Town and met all you other wonderful people. And to everyone over the UK who helped me with the decision to move, thank you for all your input and advice! Would not have done it without your advice, encouragement and general enthusiasm for getting me over there!

Keep in touch!

See you soon.
