Good dive! 3 bass, biggest 1.5 kilo.
Muddy called me up this morning and made me an offer I could not refuse. The tides where right, the wind was right, the sun was out… what was a man to do! So we headed out and headed direct to the Kellen where we been having some good success lately.
It was not to disappoint yet again! As I entered the water the bass started shoaling under me in about 6-8 meters of water. I did not want to risk a shot from the surface so dived. Right near the end of the dive they came back in with my first fish leading, a shoal of about 5. The visibility was superb today, 8 to 10 metres so they saw me early. They kept coming slowly but a few meters out still… I could not make out which way they where going to turn…so not wanting to waste such good early luck, I took the head on shot and stoned him. Good feeling to have one in the bag 3 minutes into the dive…
The shoal moved off then and I had a few more dives before seeing them again. Took another fish from that dive, fairly easy second shot. Feeling good at this point, seen fish twice, two in the bag!
Same thing happened again with the shoal moving off after taking a fish. I moved with the tide then and drifted directly onto the Kellen. I had a couple of dives not seeing fish, some kelp had drifted across my mask and obscured my vision for a few seconds. When it moved back I saw two good fish coming round the Kellen low in the water. By the time I’d seen them they where past me so had to bring the gun round quite a bit to take the shot. Luckily, being quite buried in the kelp helped not to spook them and I maneged to take one of them low. I was able to bring him in quickly and not loose the fish. This was the best fish of the day and I was pretty chuffed! Been in the water less than an hour 🙂
From the Kellen it was back on the boat to try the Stannock. The Stannock has not been performing well and today was much the same, not a fish to be seen. So it was back to the Kellen for another quick look but by this stage it was getting towards low water and the fish had moved off.
All in all one of the more enjoyable dives of the year! Thanks to the skipper Muddy for taking me out, good call! 🙂
